What’s The Difference between Weight Loss & Fat Loss?

When you have a weight loss goal, you probably break out the scale first. After all, it’s one of the easiest ways to measure your progress. But, there are limitations to what that number can tell you, and in many instances, it can take you down the wrong path. Namely: Weight loss and fat loss are not the same thing. We turned to an expert to break it all down.

What does weight loss mean generally?

So, the number on the scale is lower than the week before. When you see that number go down, you can’t automatically assume that it’s all fat. “Weight loss is a reduction of total body mass. When you see the number on the scale go down it could be from one or a combination of fat, muscle, and water loss.

Your body is mostly just water. “As much as 60 percent of the adult body weight is made up of water weight. The term ‘losing water weight’ just means a fluid loss in the body,”. Lots of things can cause fluid retention, like your hormones or eating a lot of salt or a higher carb meal. For each gram of carbohydrate stored in the body as glycogen, the body also stores three grams of water.

When you consume fewer calories, it’s also likely you’re also consuming fewer carbohydrates, whether that decrease is intentional (e.g., a lower carb diet) or natural (you’re eating less). During calorie restriction, your body dips into these glycogen stores for energy and releases the accompanying water. (So long water weight.)

The scale goes down as a result of losing water weight, and this accounts for much of the weight loss in the very beginning. Adding to the confusion, Water weight can fluctuate, so it can feel discouraging to see the number on the scale go up and down at different times of the day if you are not aware of the different variables and factors that can contribute to these changes. This is one reason why the scale can be a source of frustration and confusion and can be really de-motivating.

More likely, though, your long-term goal is to lose fat.

What is fat loss, then?

Weight loss can also result from fat loss (so consider fat loss under the umbrella of weight loss!). It’s tricky, though, because traditional scales can only tell you how much you weigh, and most won’t tell you if there’s been a reduction in body fat in particular. The scale simply shows your body weight, but does not specify anything beyond that. Just by looking at that number you don’t know if you’re losing water weight, fat, or muscle.

Body fat percentage, specifically, can be measured in the following ways:

  • Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA)
  • Hydrostatic Weighing
  • Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA)
  • Skinfold Callipers
  • Smart scales

The DEXA scan is widely considered as one of the most accurate and comprehensive body composition tests. However, it can be expensive, and it’s usually accessible. You can also get a body composition test with callipers or use a smart scale that estimates body fat. These methods may not be as accurate, but could be a good starting place for those looking to learn more about their body composition.

Waist circumference is also another important measure, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For women, having a waist circumference of more than 35 inches signals excess abdominal fat, a marker of your risk for diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

How do I lose fat, as opposed to muscle or water weight?

When you lose weight, some is from muscle loss. To preserve this lean tissue (which supports your metabolism), eat enough protein and strength train, two factors that will aid in eventual fat loss.  For sustained fat loss, being in a smallcaloriedeficit every day, along with exercise, instead of cutting out entire food groups and over-exercising, is what I would recommend for sustained fat loss,

 gradual reduction in calories to minimize muscle loss while still accomplishing fat loss. Focus on eating less fried foods, processed foods, and sugar while enjoying more fresh fruits, quality protein sources, and of course vegetables.

What is the Best Non-Invasive Fat Removal / Reduction in 2021?

Nonsurgical body contouring, also known as nonsurgical fat reduction, are procedures that destroy fat cells aimed to reduce or remove stubborn pockets of fat without surgery in different areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, bottom, thighs and upper arms.

Surgical liposuction procedures differ from nonsurgical body contouring primarily because laser fat removal techniques do not require incisions, stitches, anaesthesia or lengthy recovery times. Non invasive fat removal procedures in 2021 aren’t intended to be weight loss solutions.  Some of the procedures work by freezing fat cells, others use penetrated heat through radiofrequency and more.

There are several types of methods we used at Body Lipo Lincoln for nonsurgical fat removal:

One: Cavitation Non-Invasive Fat Removal, using low frequency ultrasound waves. The energy travels 3cm deep into the subcutaneous fat cells resulting in vibrations to break down the walls of the targeted fat cell. I methodically work my way round the overall circumference of the targeted area. The result – permanent subcutaneous fat removal (fat you can grab with your hands)  and inch loss of an overall circumference.

Two: Fat Freeze is a non-invasive procedure that uses cooling technology to reduce localised body fat.  A handheld vacuum device, with cooling plates, is positioned on the selected body area, which freezes the tissue to -6˚C. Fat cells are far more susceptible to the cold than other cells so they begin to crystallise and breakdown, without damaging the surrounding tissue.  The destroyed fat cells are absorbed and expelled by the body, leaving the treated area to shrink over the course of the following weeks. It can take up to 2-8 weeks to see the full results.

Three: Involves two types of Radio Frequency techniques, (a) A long wave frequency to melt the fat, a simplistic way to think about it is this flattens firm, stubborn fat cells. (b) A shorter frequency wave length to target the skin to stimulate additional collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid to the targeted area. The result – Skin Tightening. This prevents any laxity in the skin as we remove the fat.

Four: Acoustic Therapy, aka Shockwave Therapy, which works by stimulating the breakdown of fat, Skin Tightening and Lymphatic Drainage. The high energy radial waves squeeze the surrounding tissue and break down the stubborn fat structure while additionally stimulating collagen, improving blood flow and stimulates lymphatic drainage which is extremely important for draining the broken down fat cells, other toxins and waste to exist the body.

Five: HIFEM technique strengthens and builds muscles. Using the Power Sculpt machine, I can deliver energy to the targeted muscles such as abdominals, biceps, triceps, buttocks and thighs to cause what is known as supramaximal muscle contractions. The result – in 30mins your muscles will have done the equivalent of 20,000 crunches or squats. Furthermore, as this energy goes down 7cm deep, the fat surrounding the muscle reduces, muscle tissue increases and for women with abdominal separation concerns this is reduced.

Six: Infrared Light therapy. About 65% of the human body is made up of water. During an infrared session, the body’s core temperature is raised, which stimulates sweat production and allows the body to release toxins and fats through the sweat glands. The process is similar to when your body enters the “fat burning” stage of a good cardiovascular workout. It also increases collagen and elastin in the skin while creating a slimmer figure. It’s completely safe, natural, painless and non-invasive.

When it comes to Non-Surgical Fat Reduction more often than not a course of treatment is required. What do fat cells do?

Fat has a bad reputation. Many people look to get rid of it and try to reduce levels of it in their diet. However, fat has a critical role to play in our body. This article explores what fat cells are, why we have them and how they work to play an essential role in the body. It also examines if it is possible to get rid of fat cells, and if so, how this can be achieved.

What are fat cells?

Fat cells are scientifically referred to as adipocytes and have developed as specialist cells within the body that make and store fat. As well as being a primary site for energy storage, they are also critical in regulating a number of the body’s internal processes.

There are two types of fat cells or fat (adipose) tissue within the body. Fat cells increase in size as more energy is taken in until they reach a maximum level and may then divide. The white fat cells store and release energy, and the brown fat cells generate body heat.

Why do we have fat?

The human body stores variable amounts of fat, including essential and stored fat. The healthy range for women is 21-36%. Men generally store less body fat, so their healthy range is between 12-25%. The number and size of fat cells in our body increase if excess energy is consumed.

As well as storing fat under the skin, known as subcutaneous fat, excess fat can also be stored on muscles, in the liver and on other organs. The visceral fat stored around the organs is the type that can be harmful and lead to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and sometimes cancer.

Despite this risk, fat cells still have critical functions to play within the body, and we need to have a certain amount to keep us healthy. Fat cells store a lot of energy, which was very useful historically when we were much more physically active, and when food was not so readily available. The fat cells would release this energy into the bloodstream, when required, and use it as fuel; critical for survival in challenging environments.

Fat also acts as a layer of protection that helps to insulate the body and safeguard our internal organs from any harm. These cells are also involved in metabolic processes that keep our body functioning correctly.

How do fat cells work?

Our body’s primary source of energy is carbohydrates, which is either used immediately in the form of glucose or accessed from glycogen stores in the liver and muscles. Once the store of carbohydrate is depleted, our body switches to fat for energy. Training the body to burn fat efficiently as a fuel source can promote weight loss.

It is our white fat cells that take care of a lot of our energy homeostasis, storing the excess energy as triglycerides. When triggered by a lipase enzyme, the fat cells release their fatty acids into the bloodstream for use by other organs. The triglycerides are the fuel source that powers many of our body’s internal processes, as well as our external day-to-day activity.

White fat cells and adipose tissue also play a crucial role in regulating lipid metabolism, secreting important molecules that contain hormones, such as leptin, adiponectin, and adipsin. Hormones act as a signalling system within the body, and these secretions by our fat cells help to determine our food intake, insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion.

Brown fat or adipose tissue is vital for heat regulation. The higher levels of mitochondria in brown fat, compared to white, enables it to release its stored energy as heat and protect the body against hypothermia. This process is critically important for newborns and for those residing in colder climates. Studies have shown that people exposed to a cooler environment develop more brown fat and have corresponding changes in their metabolism.

The role of brown fat is not fully understood. However, its potential has led to increased interest in the research community, who are looking to establish whether its calorie-burning properties could be utilised for weight loss.

Can you get rid of fat cells?

When you diet or exercise and your energy expenditure is more than your calorie intake, your body will begin to breakdown fat for energy, and it is this process that leads to weight loss. As the body metabolises the fat, the energy is expended as heat or used for physical or internal activities.

Fat cells are incredibly easily created when a high-fat diet is consumed. Weight is also gained as these fat cells increase in size. However, unfortunately, the reverse is not so simple. Dieting will shrink fat cells, but they do not die and, therefore, it does not get rid of them. Although the fat cells are smaller in size, the fact that they remain is one reason why individuals can regain weight again quickly after going on a diet.

There are some treatments available that get rid of fat cells permanently. Liposuction is one option, but as an invasive procedure, it can lead to complications, and there is no guarantee that results will be successful.

How does Fat Freezing get rid of fat cells?

What can I expect during a Fat Freezing treatment?

One of the frequently asked questions by patients exploring the Fat Freeze procedure is what to expect on the day of the treatment.
The procedure is non-invasive and uses no needles or anaesthetics. This means that, other than mild swelling or redness, most patients are able to get back to their day-to-day life with minimal interruption.

Prior to the treatment day, you will meet with a Body Lipo Lincoln specialist for an initial consultation. This medical professional will go through everything to expect during the process, explore if the Fat Freezing procedure is right for you and, if so, design a customised treatment plan.

On the day of your treatment, an applicator will be placed on the area of fat targeted. A vacuum will then be used to gently pull the tissue into the device and begin to freeze the fat cells by exposing them to very cold temperatures. During the treatment, you may feel a mild tugging sensation as the targeted area is pulled into the device. While the fat cells are freezing, you are likely to experience a localised intensely cold feeling before the area numbs.

What results can be achieved from a Fat Freezing  procedure?

Fat Freezing the hottest trend!

There has been a lot of buzz lately about fat freezing. Freezing fat, known medically as cryolipolysis, is one of the hottest trends in non-invasive body sculpting — that is, losing pockets of fat without needles, knives, or real downtime.

The basics of Body Fat.

Let’s start with the basics. Not all fat is created equal. We have two distinct types of fat in our bodies: subcutaneous fat (the kind that may roll over the waistband of your pants) and visceral a fat (the stuff that lines your organs and is associated with diabetes and heart disease.

From here on out, when we refer to fat, we are talking about subcutaneous fat, as this is the type of fat that cryolipolysis targets. A recent study showed that the body’s ability to remove subcutaneous fat decreases with age, which means we are fighting an uphill battle.

Cryolipolysis — which literally translates into cold (cryo) fat (lipo) destruction (lysis) — was invented, in part, by observing what can happen when kids eat ice lollies. No kidding here. The cofounders of this process were intrigued by something called “cold-induced fat necrosis” that was reported to occur after young children ate ice lollies that were inadvertently left resting on the cheek for several minutes. Skin samples taken from the patients, these showed inflammation in the fat, but normal overlying skin. Thus, it appeared that fat may be more sensitive to cold injury that other tissue type

Using this concept, a cooling device was tested on pigs in 2007 to see if fat cells could be selectively destroyed. The results were promising and predictable; there was about a 15mm reduction in the pig’s fat layer, without damaging the overlying skin, in the treated areas. By 2010, the first cryolipolysis technology approved for human use, the treatment was cleared for love handles. Clearance for treating other parts of the body, including the thighs, belly, bra fat, back, underside of the buttocks, and chin soon followed.

How does cryolipolysis work?

No one knows for sure, but we think that a few days after treatment, the cooled fat cells die. Over the next several months, macrophages, part of the immune system’s clean-up crew, digest the dead fat cells.

A cool procedure

To date, there have been more than eight million fat freezing treatments performed worldwide. Unlike liposuction, which can require anaesthesia and comes with risks of bleeding or serious infection, Fat Freezing is a relatively safe in-office procedure, with minimal pain and no downtime.

The treatment itself takes 30 to 60 minutes per application, and multiple applications may be needed to cover an area.

The most common side effects of treatment include redness, bruising, swelling, tingling, numbness, or darkening of the treated area. Most of these side effects, if present, will resolve within several hours after treatment.

Results can be seen as soon as two weeks, with maximum benefit seen at approximately three months. Average reduction in fat ranges from about 10% to 40% per round of treatment, and there is no evidence of any body-wide side effects. A second round of treatment may be needed after several months, depending on the desired results.

Who’s a good candidate for fat freezing?

Cryolipolysis appears to be a safe and effective treatment for fat loss without the downtime of liposuction or surgery. But it is important to note that cryolipolysis is intended for fat loss, not weight loss. The ideal candidate has stubborn, pinchable areas of fat that are difficult to get rid of with diet and exercise. Cryolipolysis also doesn’t target visceral fat, so it won’t improve your overall health. But it may help you fit into your favourite pair of skinny jeans.
