Read what the experts say about Ingrowing hair and Laser Hair Removal

Many of us do not like the look of body or facial hair but with plucking, threading, Shaving, depilatory creams and waxing can leave you with irritable, painful unwanted ingrowing hairs.  Worst still, all those options are temporary — so, the problem just eventually repeats itself. In search for a solution, I reached out to experts to find out more about pesky ingrowing hairs and to learn if laser hair removal is the best way to stop them!

Jessica Hendry Aesthetics Practitioner

“An ingrown hair occurs when the hair grows back into the skin. This causes unwanted complications such as inflammation, pain, infection and darkening of the skin,” aesthetic practitioner Jessica Hendry of Body Lipo Lincoln . “I absolutely recommend Laser Hair Removal as the ultimate way to combat the formation of ingrown hairs. It literally gets to the root of the problem! Laser hair removal selectively targets hair follicles to stop hairs from growing back in the first place. No hair growth means no ingrown hairs!”

“Sure, ingrown hairs are uncomfortable but can also lead to scarring, discoloration and even cysts! Laser hair removal is the most effective way to prevent ingrown hairs because it targets the source of the problem by damaging the hair follicle and inhibiting the follicle’s ability to produce hair,” notes aesthetic. “As a bonus, laser hair removal will leave you with soft and smooth skin, which means you can ditch the razor and cancel your waxing appointments for good!”

Louise White Clinical Lead & founder of Body Lipo Lincoln

“Ingrown hairs are a common problem, particularly in areas of dense, coarse hair growth like the bikini line!” says Louise White Clinical lead and founder of Body Lipo Lincoln.  “Since this area is exposed in a bathing suit, people often pick at ingrown as an attempt to resolve them, which in turn only increases redness, risk of infection and PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)! In my opinion, the best permanent solution to a smooth, hair free bikini line is laser hair removal with state-of-the-art technology that kills ingrown hairs at the root-like Trilogy Ice Advance Laser hair Removal system.  It takes about six to eight treatments spaced four to six weeks apart, so I recommend starting now to achieve a beautiful bikini line free of ingrown, irritation and dark spots by next summer!”

“If you don’t grow your hair, you, of course, can’t get ingrown hair, So, yes, laser hair removal is the gold standard means by which you can prevent ingrown hair! The most common thing we hear from patients suffering from ingrown hair is that they wish they knew about laser hair removal treatments years ago!”

Infrared sauna, Body Lipo Lincoln

Seven Benefits of Far Infrared Sauna Therapy (FIR)

1. Infrared Saunas improves blood circulation and skin complexion

Far-Infrared Saunas expand capillaries which stimulate increased blood flow, regeneration, circulation and oxygen.

It also maintains and promotes healthy lung function

If sebaceous glands are activated, accumulated cosmetics in pores can be eliminated through the skin (sweat and oil glands), resulting in clearer skin

2. Strengthens cardiovascular system

Far-Infrared saunas can strengthen the cardiovascular system by causing heart rate and cardiac output to increase, and diastolic blood pressure to decrease – research by NASA in the early 1980s led to the conclusion that far infrared saunas stimulation of cardiovascular function would be the ideal way to maintain cardiovascular conditioning in American astronauts during long space flight

FIR and gentle tissue warming have also been shown to help improve the ‘health of the cells that line our blood vessels, which if left untreated may increase the risk of heart disorders.

The benefits of an infrared sauna include; pain relief, collagen boosting, anti-aging, skin purification, cell health, improves circulation, boosts mood, burns calories, gives you a workout (without actually working out) and gives your skin a lovely glow

3) Infrared Saunas improve detoxification

Far-Infrared sauna is excellent for detoxification and helps lymphatic cleansing

Scientists in Japan report that in the FIR treatment of clogged capillary vessels, heat expands the capillaries and then initiates the start of a process to dissolve hidden toxins.

Far-Infrared thereby promotes the elimination of fats, chemicals and toxins from the blood: poisons, heavy metals – carcinogenic substances from food processing – lactic acid, free fatty acids, and subcutaneous fat associated with aging and fatigue – excess sodium associated with blood pressure – and uric acid.

Where these toxins accumulate, blood circulation is blocked and cellular energy is impaired. Elimination begins when an 8-10 micron Far-Infrared wave is applied to these large water molecules and the water begins to vibrate. This vibration reduces the ion bonds of the atoms that are holding together the molecules of water. As the vibration continues, breakdown of the water molecules occurs and encapsulated gases and other toxic materials are released.

4) Infrared saunas help wound healing

Some good quality experimental and clinical scientific studies (2003) from Japan have shown Infrared saunas to result in more rapid wound healing which was independent of changes in blood flow and skin temperature.

FIR helped this healing by stimulating a group of cells called fibroblasts to make more collagen which is a very important part of good wound healing and tissue repair.

Furthermore, it supports cell growth, DNA synthesis, and protein synthesis all necessary during tissue repair and regeneration. Excellent for healing burns, scar tissue and skin problems such as acne and skin breakouts – anti-aging effects and lessening/softening of wrinkles due to enhanced collagen production.

5) Relaxation and pain/aches management

Infrared Saunas therapy relieves nervous tension and relaxes the auto-neuro muscles thereby helping the body make the most of its intended healing abilities.

FIR reduces soreness on nerve endings and muscle spasms, as muscle fibres are heated. As a result, rapid reduction of swelling, inflammation and associated pain occurs. Relaxation of muscles and relief of muscular aches – reduces back, shoulder and neck pains.

FIR soothes tension and stress in both body and mind.

The benefits of an infrared sauna include; pain relief, collagen boosting, anti-aging, skin purification, cell health, improves circulation, boosts mood, burns calories, gives you a workout (without actually working out) and gives your skin a lovely glow

6) Immunity boosting

Infrared saunas therapy strengthen and support the Immune system by supporting increased production of white blood cells (leukocytes) by the bone marrow and killer T-cells by the thymus.

“Natural killer cells in the immune system are crucial to effective immune defense. Hyperthermia releases a bunch of cytokines and heat shock proteins which make cancer cells more immunogenic that means they are better recognized by the natural killer cells. NK cells are essential in killing virus-infected cells and destroying cancer cells. The nutrients selenium, ß-glycan and zinc increase circulating levels of natural killer cells and boost their cancer-killing activity.” – Extract from an article written by Dr. Friedrich Douwes, Klinic St. Georg, Germany.

7) Cancer support

Infrared Sauna Thermal Therapy – commonly known as hyperthermia across Europe and Asia – provides support in the destruction of malignant cells which supposedly cannot survive if the temperature of the cell becomes 107.6F/42C and above

Hyperthermia is used worldwide by hospitals and thermal oncologists. Here are just a few countries that is can be found in use such as Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Hungry, Turkey, Iran, India, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Japan.

Hyperthermia is used extensively in Asia and Europe – especially Japan and Germany – but is only fairly recently in comparison, being researched and utilized within the UK, acknowledged and attested to by the Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute on their respective websites.

How to Properly Care for Your Skin After Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal is a professional procedure generally conducted by a Aesthetics practitioner help get rid of unwanted hair. The process works by concentrating beams of light to target hair follicles and destroy their hairs.

Laser treatments are most commonly used for your:

  • face
  • chest
  • armpits
  • back
  • bikini line
  • legs

2020 research reviewTrusted Source showed that advances in long-pulsed lasers have made it possible for this treatment to address not just dark hair on light skin as in the past, but also darker skin tones, too. Your physician will determine the best lasers to use based on both your hair and skin colours, as well as your hair texture.

Still, despite such advances in technology, Laser Hair Removal remains a complex treatment that requires careful attention to aftercare. The way you care for your skin after the procedure can help reduce the risk of side effects and possible damage.

Read on to learn more about the do’s and don’ts regarding laser hair removal aftercare, and when you should contact your physician for help.

Laser hair removal aftercare do’s

Your physician will give you specific instructions for taking care of your skin after laser treatments. In general, you should do the following to help promote skin healing and to prevent side effects.

Apply cool compresses

Wet a clean, soft washcloth with cool water and place it on the treated area for several minutes at a time. You can also use an ice pack wrapped in a paper towel. This method helps to reduce temporary swelling and pain after your laser hair removal treatment.

Protect your skin from the sun

Since your skin will be sensitive after laser hair removal, your physician will recommend that you avoid getting direct sun exposure. You should avoid the sun for 1 month before the procedure to 1 month afterward. After this time, apply sunscreen to the area of treatment every day.

Can I shave after laser hair removal?

Your physician will instruct that you shave before your procedure to ensure a more targeted treatment. While you can also shave after laser hair removal, be sure to wait for several hours after skin redness or discoloration has subsided. Avoid shaving on any skin that’s:

  • swollen
  • red or discoloured
  • painful

Laser hair removal aftercare don’ts

Knowing how to care for your skin after laser hair removal is crucial to reducing side effects, but you should also know what not to do after your procedure.

  • Space recurring treatments no sooner than 4 to 6 weeks apart. It may take multiple treatments spread out over time to achieve your desired results.
  • Don’t tan. This may increase your risk of hypopigmentation (light spots), as well as burns.
  • Don’t use tanning lotions. While seemingly harmless, these products can be irritating to skin that’s just undergone laser therapy. You may experience rashes, burns, and bumps.
  • Don’t apply lotions with fragrances or perfumes to the treatment area. These may cause skin redness or discoloration, and irritation.
  • Don’t apply deodorant to the underarms if laser hair treatment was targeted in this area. These products may also cause skin irritation.
  • Avoid body scrubs for at least a few days, as it can irritate your skin.

Potential side effects of laser hair removal

Redness or discoloration, and swelling are common — but temporary — side effects of laser hair removal. You may also experience mild pain. Such side effects usually resolve within 1 to 3 days, according to Body Lipo Lincoln.

An experienced, professional will work to reduce side effects from laser hair removal by using the right types of lasers for your skin and hair colour or type. They will also ask you about your medical history and any medications you take that might cause adverse reactions.

More serious side effects of this procedure may include:

  • skin pigmentation changes
  • scars
  • burns (very rare)
  • severe pain
  • blisters
  • infections

Takeaway Body Lipo Lincoln also shares that due to both general safety and effectiveness, laser hair removal remains one of the most popular nonsurgical procedures in the U.K.  As with any cosmetic procedure, though, it’s important to follow your physician’s aftercare instructions to help achieve the best results possible. Taking care of your skin after laser hair removal may reduce the risk of side effects, but not all risks are avoidable. Be sure to discuss the benefits and risks for your hair and skin types with your physician, and to report any new or worsening reactions right away

How often do you think about wee? Are you dreading going back to the office?

If you don’t have any bladder issues – like the oops moment when you laugh, cough or sneeze or feel like you need the loo all the time, probably not much.  Yet heading back to the office you might want to think about your bladder health.

Pre-Covid, you worked all-day with few bathrooms breaks as many of us don’t get the opportunity to go to the toilet whenever you want, but spending the last year working from home with constant access to the bathroom and going whenever the feeling takes you, may have resulted in you spoiling your bladder making going back to the office a little bit tricker.

The more often we go and the less volume we hold in our bladder, the brain will train itself this is the new norm, but when we get back to the office and the toilet breaks are less often the urge to pee becomes more of a problem.

On average the bladder will hold between 300ml to 500ml when you first get the urge to pee expanding to 1000ml in a large bladder at desperation point.  Which mean that the average bladder should be emptied 5 – 7 times per day (for someone drinking 2 litres of fluid per day).

So is this a problem that we have over indulged our bladder?  Well for someone with a healthy bladder no, but if you suffer from urge or stress incontinence this can be a serious concern.  One of the most common practices to get your bladder back into shape, is bladder training which retrains the brain to send the urge you need the loo when your bladder has more pee in it so you need the toilet less frequently.

When bladder training and you first feel the urge to pee hold it for 10 mins do this for 7 days, if you can do this easily increase the time to 20 mins for week 2, then you can increase this in week three to 30 mins, week four to 45 mins, week five to 60 mins and week six to 90 mins.  If you can’t comfortably make the times keep repeating this week until you can.   Important note do not hold your bladder to the point where you feel pain this is a sign that your bladder is too full.

In summery try not to spoil your bladder and go to the loo as soon as the feeling strikes, try holding for a little while this may just help your transition back to the office more comfortable.

If you are suffering for Stress or Urge incontinence why not speak to one of continence specialists at Body Lipo Lincoln and discover the life changing benefits of the Emsella Chair.

SPF is essential every day, even in the winter months.  The suns aging rays can penetrate clouds leaving your skin vulnerable to its exposure.  Sun damage can cause premature aging, sun spots and can lead to skin cancer.  You should wear a minimum of SPF 30 every day as single product not a combined in makeup.

Getting a good eight hours sleep is also good for your skin, when we don’t get enough rest our skin and look pale, dull and often leave dark circles under our eyes.  Not get enough sleep affects skin hydration, collagen growth and skin texture.

Exfoliating is important to get rid of dead skin cells which gives us a brighter complexion.  Unfortunately, over exfoliating can cause damage to your skin barrier by causing tiny tears.  If using a physical exfoliator, you should use it only 2 -3 times per week and be very gentle in its application. Chemical exfoliators are a good alternative and are gentler to your skin.

You should be changing your pillowcases every 3-4 days to prevent bacteria from multiplying, certain bacteria can lead to acne.  Top tip invest in silk pillow cases which are softer on the skin and can help to reduce wrinkles.

Water is the best and cheapest beauty product you can buy for your skin.  You should be drinking at least 2-3 litres of water a day.  Hydrated skin makes it look bright and plump without the use of hyaluronic acids.

Your neck needs attention too.  The neck is often forgotten and is one of places on our body that shows signs of ageing the most.  When using moisturiser and SPF don’t just stop at the jaw line bring down to the neck as well.

Leaving your make up on when you go to bed is one of the worst things you can do for your skin and speeds up the signs of aging dramatically.  Don’t forget your skin is the largest organ in the body and needs to breath.  Try taking your make up off after your evening meal so you’re not so tempted to just jump into bed at the end of a long day.

Most phones are a haven for bacteria and when we answer a call we put the phone to our face and transfer the bacteria onto it.  Clean your phone regularly with anti-bacterial wipes.

Radiofrequency facial doesn’t sound the most exciting, but radiofrequency treatments have been proven effective for tightening and firming Skin for years. Like laser and LED treatments, radiofrequency uses energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production, but the heat energy is electrical rather than light based.

Louise White Skin expert and founder and clinical lead of Body Lipo Lincoln explains that radiofrequency is appealing because it’s a non-invasive, gentle way to tighten skin:

“Radiofrequency (RF) is a treatment that has become increasingly popular in recent years and uses RF energy to heat the dermis and tighten the skin without damaging the top layer.”

Not all radiofrequency machines work in exactly the same way & not all machines of equal strength that’s why you should always go to a medically lead clinic, but they fundamentally all use radiofrequency energy to tighten the underlying skin structure and contour the face to create firm, toned and youthful looking skin according to skin expert Louise White. It’s this tightening, firming action, brought about by boosting collagen and elastin synthesis, that makes radiofrequency especially suitable for targeting loose skin and the neck and chin, wrinkles and lines that develop between the nose and mouth.

How Long is the TREATMENT?

Your average radiofrequency treatment takes anywhere between 30 and 45 minutes according to Louise White and there’s very little downtime – you’re likely to experience a bit of redness for up to 24 hours afterwards but that’s about it. During the treatment a machine will heat skin to a bearable 38-40 degrees.

IT works on the body too

Louise says that radiofrequency treatments can smooth stretch marks out and tighten areas of loose skin, making it just as apt for your bum as it is for your face. Louise breaks down why she incorporates radiofrequency into Fat Melting treatment:

“Unlike some other fat reduction methods, this treatment is completely painless, has no downtime and provides an even, feathered result without surface irregularities which can a problem with other technologies.

“Mechanisms of action include encouraging fat cells to commit ‘suicide’ (so-called adipocyte apoptosis) after treatment with selective radiofrequency.”

Louise highlights that the treatment is particularly suitable for upper and lower abs and inner and outer thighs, while Louise adds that it can also have great results on upper arms. Some swear by its efficacy when it comes to reducing the appearance of cellulite too.

rf is suitable for most clients

Louise has seen an increase in both men and women seeking radiofrequency treatments and puts it down to “a desire to sculpt problem areas while avoiding pain and long periods of downtime”, plus most of us can serve to benefit:

“The beauty of radiofrequency is that it is suitable for most people – the depth of heating helps to firm, tighten and lift as well as reinvigorating skin for a healthy glow.”

This ‘glow’ is down to the fact that radiofrequency treatments help to rev up collagen production over time.

It Takes time to work

Like all most things in life it’s not a one hit wonder but takes time to work. “All energy-based bio-stimulative treatments naturally require a course of several sessions (normally a course of 8) and will induce results gradually over weeks. Look at it like joining a skin gym – great results are rarely achieved in a single session.”

Louise states that having one treatment every week for 8 weeks is ideal, you should start seeing results after few weeks.

it’s not for you if you have ROSACEA

As it’s a heat-based treatment it’s likely to cause further inflammation and make redness worse if you’ve got rosacea, and it’s not advisable if you’ve got broken blood vessels or capillaries. As with most aesthetic treatments, it’s also not suitable if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

You’ll often see radiofrequency offered alongside other aesthetic treatments including Chin Sculpting & Tightening and celebrity-loved Skin Pen microneedling. “Everyone wants high-performance facial treatments that target all of their concerns within one session, so combination facial treatments are becoming increasingly popular,” says Louise. “Radiofrequency speeds up collagen and elastin production and tightens the skin so tends to form the basis to most of my facial treatments.

“I also find RF shortens recovery time and enhances the results of skin peels and pigmentation treatments as it helps the skin cells turn over faster,” Louise continues.

It’s not just because it supercharges results that you’ll often see RF combined with other offerings, as Louise explains. “Radiofrequency doesn’t antagonise or have any contra-indications for clients who have had previous treatments such as filler or botulinum toxin injections.” Other skin tightening technologies, such as HIFU, can affect previous treatments, giving them less longevity, she says.

As with Skin Pen microneedling is the main treatment you’ll see radiofrequency combined with. “I would always encourage my microneedling clients to have a RF treatment immediately before or a week later to supercharge their results,” Louise says. “When we microneedle we are limited to a certain depth on the face and we are mainly working on skin texture but we don’t achieve deeper lifting and tightening. Using radiofrequency before microneedling helps to stimulate collagen at a deeper level and speed up the results of the treatment.”

Skin Club

So, if you’re unsure what treatment is right for you leave it to Louise and her team, Louise created the Skin Club combining all of the forementioned treatments in one affordable club. What’s The Difference between Weight Loss & Fat Loss?

When you have a weight loss goal, you probably break out the scale first. After all, it’s one of the easiest ways to measure your progress. But, there are limitations to what that number can tell you, and in many instances, it can take you down the wrong path. Namely: Weight loss and fat loss are not the same thing. We turned to an expert to break it all down.

What does weight loss mean generally?

So, the number on the scale is lower than the week before. When you see that number go down, you can’t automatically assume that it’s all fat. “Weight loss is a reduction of total body mass. When you see the number on the scale go down it could be from one or a combination of fat, muscle, and water loss.

Your body is mostly just water. “As much as 60 percent of the adult body weight is made up of water weight. The term ‘losing water weight’ just means a fluid loss in the body,”. Lots of things can cause fluid retention, like your hormones or eating a lot of salt or a higher carb meal. For each gram of carbohydrate stored in the body as glycogen, the body also stores three grams of water.

When you consume fewer calories, it’s also likely you’re also consuming fewer carbohydrates, whether that decrease is intentional (e.g., a lower carb diet) or natural (you’re eating less). During calorie restriction, your body dips into these glycogen stores for energy and releases the accompanying water. (So long water weight.)

The scale goes down as a result of losing water weight, and this accounts for much of the weight loss in the very beginning. Adding to the confusion, Water weight can fluctuate, so it can feel discouraging to see the number on the scale go up and down at different times of the day if you are not aware of the different variables and factors that can contribute to these changes. This is one reason why the scale can be a source of frustration and confusion and can be really de-motivating.

More likely, though, your long-term goal is to lose fat.

What is fat loss, then?

Weight loss can also result from fat loss (so consider fat loss under the umbrella of weight loss!). It’s tricky, though, because traditional scales can only tell you how much you weigh, and most won’t tell you if there’s been a reduction in body fat in particular. The scale simply shows your body weight, but does not specify anything beyond that. Just by looking at that number you don’t know if you’re losing water weight, fat, or muscle.

Body fat percentage, specifically, can be measured in the following ways:

  • Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA)
  • Hydrostatic Weighing
  • Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA)
  • Skinfold Callipers
  • Smart scales

The DEXA scan is widely considered as one of the most accurate and comprehensive body composition tests. However, it can be expensive, and it’s usually accessible. You can also get a body composition test with callipers or use a smart scale that estimates body fat. These methods may not be as accurate, but could be a good starting place for those looking to learn more about their body composition.

Waist circumference is also another important measure, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For women, having a waist circumference of more than 35 inches signals excess abdominal fat, a marker of your risk for diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

How do I lose fat, as opposed to muscle or water weight?

When you lose weight, some is from muscle loss. To preserve this lean tissue (which supports your metabolism), eat enough protein and strength train, two factors that will aid in eventual fat loss.  For sustained fat loss, being in a smallcaloriedeficit every day, along with exercise, instead of cutting out entire food groups and over-exercising, is what I would recommend for sustained fat loss,

gradual reduction in calories to minimize muscle loss while still accomplishing fat loss. Focus on eating less fried foods, processed foods, and sugar while enjoying more fresh fruits, quality protein sources, and of course vegetables.

The Three Best Exercises to Strengthen the Pelvic Floor

It’s important to note after child birth and again at menopause and with natural aging we lose strength in our pelvic floor, the result of this is what the pad adverts call the oops moment, it means when we cough, laugh or sneeze we put pressure though our abdominal region and push down the bladder which can open the urethra and give us leakage (stress incontinence) but this can also happen in exercise or simply when you stand from a seated potion.

The pelvic floor is responsible to support the bladder, uterus and bowl.  When the Pelvic floor is strong it stops the organ sagging and the opening to the vagina, rectum and urethra remains tight.

The First way to stop pelvic floor weakness is by strengthening the pelvic floor and supporting the bladder to stop it moving and leaking.  A strong pelvic floor muscle this will support the bladder, uterus and bowl and help with lower back pain.

Other factors that will weaken a pelvic floor chronic coughing, lifting heavy objects and being overweight.  A weak pelvic floor can lead to painful sex, gas incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.  So, if you feel you have a weak pelvic floor its never to late to start the exercises below.

One:  Body Weight Sumo Squats

These work the largest part of the pelvic floor muscle, stand with your feet shoulder width apart, point your toes out wards and bend at the knees to a 90% angel keeping a straight back while pushing the bum and hips back into a seated position and hold for three seconds and return to the start position.   This will not only work your pelvic floor but also the Glutes, Quadriceps and Hamstrings.  Do three sets of 12 to 16 reps

Two:  The Bridge

Lay down on your back with your feet and palms of your hands flat to the floor, fold your knees to a 90% angle and raise your hips up while squeezing your glutes.  With your body weight on your shoulder and upper back you will fill your abs and pelvis stretching.  Hold for three seconds and return to the start position.  Do three sets of 12 to 16 reps.

Three: Kegels (pelvic floor crunches)

This is by far is the best exercise you can do for the pelvic floor strength this involves contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor.  The easiest way to locate the correct muscle is to stop a flow of urine mid flow, once you can recognise the correct muscle you can do this anywhere.  Now you can locate the right muscle contract and lift the pelvic floor and hold for between 5 and 10 second then release do this 10 times, three times per day.

Don’t despair if you do not have the time to do the exercises above, we at Body Lipo Lincoln can help, The Emsella is an advanced medical device which simply looks like a chair. The Emsella uses electromagnetic technology to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles – this stimulation tightens the pelvic floor muscles, helping to alleviate incontinence. If like most of us you struggle to do your pelvic floor crunches daily, fear not – just 1 session on the Emsella chair is the equivalent of 11,200 pelvic floor crunches!

Can you have Laser Hair Removal with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?

For those in the know the acronym PCOS is all too recognisable. With 1 in 5 women affected by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (according to Endometriosis UK) it’s a really hot topic right now. Research shows that women who suspect they may have PCOS have a long and emotional road with many visiting numerous clinicians before being diagnosed. The University of Oulu, Finland conducted a fifteen year long study on 5889 women and found that the women with PCOS had a ‘poorer quality of life’ than those without the condition. They cited mental health issues as a result of the physical symptoms being the most common reason for this. Shockingly, that’s nearly 30% of the UK female population who are dealing with the condition and are seeking out ways to manage both internal and external side effects.

The female body is naturally in a constant state of fluctuation and produces differing levels of both female hormones and male hormones (androgens). These androgens include testosterone which play a role in triggering puberty and stimulating associated hair growth. PCOS is a medically recognised condition which causes extra androgen production which can result in virilisation. This is where more masculine features can develop physically, such as excessive facial and body hair and benign cysts (can) begin to grow on the ovaries over time. Women with PCOS may discover that this excessive hair is in fact thicker and darker due to the extra levels of hormones. To put it simply, it’s a complex condition where a women’s hormones are not performing correctly and can even be accompanied by further symptoms such as irregular (or no) periods, reduced fertility, acne, and weight gain.

Most commonly, women have reported that the excessive hair growth often seen on the face, nipple area, chest, lower abdomen and back can be a particularly distressing symptom having an immensely negative impact on their lives. The ongoing burden of shaving, plucking, or waxing this unwanted hair can be a self-esteem plummeting and time-consuming burden. Not to mention expensive, if the excessive hair growth isn’t managed effectively. For many women suffering with PCOS, finding a permanent solution to this one common (and most visible) side effect is nothing short of an absolute must.

Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be this way and here at Body Lipo Lincoln we are able to offer our clients laser hair removal for PCOS, which is one great option. If you suffer with PCOS you need not remain in the endless cycle of traditional hair removal. Many of our clients with PCOS find that laser hair removal is an effective long-term solution for treating unwanted hair rather than just endlessly removing visible hair without tackling the root of the issue (if you’ll pardon the pun). In our experience, achieving excellent and often permanent results from laser hair removal significantly improves the self-confidence of our clients and has often been called life changing.

Laser hair removal works by using concentrated light at specific wavelengths to target the hair follicles in your skin. The melanin pigment in the hair attracts the light emitted by the laser, which is then absorbed by the hair follicle, heating and disabling it causing the hair to fall out at the root. As you progress through your course of treatments your hair will become softer and finer over time and growth will gradually slow down. With continued treatment this eventually results in the permanent reduction of follicle hair growth. As your hair grows in 6 cycles, you typically need a minimum of 6 sessions ensuring you are targeting every cycle of hair growth to see the best results.

Laser hair removal can be used almost anywhere on the face and body. The most common areas we treat at Body Lipo Lincoln for PCOS sufferers are the face (including chin, cheeks, and upper lip), underarms, stomach, and legs. At Body Lipo Lincoln you have the opportunity to tailor make a bespoke treatment plan that is as individual as you and your concerns are.

The fact that PCOS actively promotes the growth of new hair, is particularly challenging for ‘traditional’ laser hair removal devices on the market. Often more treatments are required which can prove to be expensive and lengthy and if you’re going to a cheap clinic who is not using a medical grade laser, then you simply aren’t going to see long term results. Believe us, if it sounds too cheap to be true, it most likely is!

During our bespoke sessions at Body Lipo Lincoln, we harness all the power of professional laser hair removal and combine it with the with one of the most powerful, pain free technologies on the market. Our Trilogy Ice  Laser Hair Removal system has three laser lengths in one machine to enable us to treat all skin types and most possible hair types by emitting twice the power of most other leading high-quality lasers. You typically will need to start with a course of 6 sessions to really target every growth cycle. We advise our PCOS clients that they are likely to need a couple of extra ‘maintenance’ treatments due to the condition actively promoting fresh hair growth. However, this is still significantly less sessions than other ‘standard’ treatments using less effective technology. Meaning quicker and more permanent results for our PCOS clients, with less of the hefty price tag.

High power combined with the optimum wavelength means significantly greater heat is transferred to the hair follicle. The Trilogy Ice is a faster treatment with session completed in as little as 15 minutes (depending on the size of the treatment areas). That’s nearly twice as fast as other leading laser systems…

Scared that extra power and extra heat sounds uncomfortable? The best bit about the Trilogy Ice Laser is it has an integrated ‘Cyro cooling’ technology device meaning you it’s a lot more comfortable. This helps us to keep the surface of the skin and your nerve endings constantly cool, so extraordinarily fast results can be achieved with minimal discomfort.

Not only will you see a permanent hair reduction of up to 90%, with laser hair removal you will also avoid ingrown hairs, shaving rash and stubble. With many other forms of hair removal, including waxing, plucking, shaving and hair removal cream, the hair will return quickly, often within a matter of days. Laser hair removal will give you long-lasting results, saving both time and money in the long term. Laser hair removal can also improve skin tone and texture, as it does not cause pigmentation or uneven skin which you can experience with shaving or waxing.

Like with any laser hair removal treatment there is a minimal amount of ‘downtime’, but certain activities should be avoided temporarily. It is important to avoid any sun exposure to the treated area for 10 days pre and post treatment. Exercise should be avoided for up to 48 hours post treatment as well as any activities that encourage sweating. Think hot showers, swimming pools and saunas. Finally, as the skin may be more sensitive avoid using exfoliating body lotions immediately before and after your sessions.

Shorter treatment times allow us to offer incredibly competitive pricing for medical grade laser hair removal starting from just £55 for a small area. What counts as a small area? This is generally classified as areas of the face for example: lips, sideburns, hairline, eyebrows, chin.

You will need to come in for a patch test 7 days prior to your treatment, even if you have had laser hair removal elsewhere. This is because each laser is different and we need to make sure you won’t react with ours. We will ask you to visit the clinic to examine your hair and skin for suitability and perform a patch test with the laser light to ensure that we select the correct light energy setting for you and your treatment.
