4 Things that could be triggering acne.

1️⃣ UV rays - While UV Rays is well know to be mildly anti inflammatory in the short term, long term tanning can promote comedogenesis which essentially is the formation and development of comedones (aka blemishes, blackheads & whiteheads).
UV rays will also make those dark marks left behind from an old spot darker. My advice - find the shade, cover up and always wear a SPF that won’t block the pores.

2️⃣ Over - Cleansing - I understand why some people love that squeaky clean feel post cleansing. It makes them feel, clean. But this obsession with over cleansing is linked with a disruption of the skins natural barrier and can flare up acne. My advice - stick to one, thorough cleanse.

3️⃣ Sugar & Diary - Unfortunately both can be associated with additional oil production as they can drive the sebaceous glands (oil producing glands) to secrete more oil through their effect on hormones involved with sugar metabolism. My advice - consume in moderation.

4️⃣ Longwear Make Up - These often can block the pores and because of the thick sheet of coverage they give this then requires lots of cleansing to remove. My advice - find a non pore blocking brand such as Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk and avoid powers. 

Acne can be distressing but there’s lots we can do to get you back on track.

During the festive season skin conditions can flare up because of the rich food, sugary snacks & the warm, cosy indoor environment. One concern I known I will be treating a lot of in my clinic next week is dehydrated skin. 

 🔑 PREVENTION IS KEY 🔑 

Here are 4 of my top tips for some skincare habits that you should try AVOID if dull, dehydrated, dry, matte skin is irritating you.

    PELVIC FLOOR HEALTH & THE MENOPAUSE ❓Does the thought of laughing, coughing, sneezing or doing exercises fill you full of dread?❓Do you feel like you’re always nipping to the toilet? BLADDER & BOWELS DURING MENOPAUSE & PERI-MENOPAUSE:1️⃣ The lining of the bladder & urinary tract change during the menopause & peri-menopause. 2️⃣ The Pelvic Floor becomes weaker.3️⃣ Your bowels become susceptible to dysfunction.These changes are all part of the natural ageing process for women and when declining estrogen happens this can cause concerns such as:1. STRESS INCONTINENCE - Where urine is leaked involuntary when coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising.2. URGE INCONTINENCE - The frequent need to pass urine. That desperate feeling of needing to go and struggling to hold on.3. PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE - It’s thought 50% of women over 50 have some level of prolapse. This happens when the ligaments & muscles of your pelvic floor are weakened. It can feel heavy and like something is falling out of your vagina. 4. CONSTIPATION - It’s so important to look after the health of your bowels during the menopause & per-menopause. So drinking plenty of water and eating a fibre rich diet to keep stools regular & soft. Try not to strain while on the toilet as this can put pressure on the back of the vagina wall causing the wall to bulge into your vagina.5. URINE INFECTIONS - As we get older our body’s natural protection from bugs in the vagina and urinary areas get weaker. UTI’s happen when these bugs spread into these areas and irritate the vagina and urinary areas. Low estrogen reduce the numbers of good bacteria in that area and thus lessens the ability for them to fight off bad bugs. 6. VAGINAL DRYNESS - The walls of the vagina thin as we age and lose elasticity along with natural lubrication. Itchy and soreness can occur. ❓WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT ❓There’s lots you can do, Incontinence doesn’t need to be an inevitable part of ageing.
